Storage Unit Packing and Storing Tips

Purchase Packing Supplies

Before packing up your belongings and moving to storage, consider the items that will be stored and how they hold up in the potential of long-term storage. You can purchase bubble wrap, mattress bags, furniture covers, and plastic totes to help you in your move. These items will ensure your belongings remain in the shape you stored them, should you need storage for longer than initially expected. We recommend not using cardboard boxes as they may not hold up over time compared to sealed containers or tubs.

Properly Pack Furniture

Once you have moved into your secure storage units, avoid using plastic coverings if you plan to use them for long-term storage. The plastic material may potentially lead to moisture damage to your furniture. We recommend draping your furniture loosely with quilts or blankets to protect your furniture from dust and other debris.

Pack Clothing in Storage Bins

Our recommendation for preventing dust, mildew, and moisture from getting to your clothes is to purchase plastic containers with lids. Unlike cardboard boxes, tubs or crates with lids secure your items from the air and space around them and make them an excellent choice for short and long-term storage. Using cedar balls will help to ward off moths or unwanted odors. Labeling your containers will allow for easy access to needed items in the future without searching through your packed belongings.

On Moving Day

  1. We recommend using pallets for your outdoor unit to create separation between the concrete floor and your items. With the separation, dirt and dust have to work harder to impact your belongings. You may use excess moving boxes if you cannot find a pallet.
  2. Store heavy items first, including bulky household appliances. It may work best to store the more oversized items that you will not access as frequently towards the back or rear of the storage unit.
  3. While you may visit your storage unit frequently, leaving a clear aisleway in your unit will help when you need a specific item from storage. Having a clear aisleway will eliminate the need for rearranging or moving boxes or furniture. To help, store from the walls out, starting by lining either side wall before moving to the other side.

Visiting Your Storage Unit

We recommend visiting your storage unit from time to time to check on the condition of the unit and your belongings. It is essential to retain the best practices we have discussed to help assure a neatly packed, organized, and protected space for your belongings when in your storage space. In addition, remember to keep your area tidy, including maintaining your walkway into your storage unit.
